Project Overview
Retaining the charming cottage character of this home, whilst providing this family with the extra space they craved, was relatively simple. With our experience and expertise, we were able to initiate the planning for an extension design that naturally flowed from the original floorplan, and, from the front gate of the property, the end-result looked as if it had always been there!
A full verandah was cut in half to make way for the new room, and the remaining verandah was given more depth. Gardens and stairs were re-positioned, and the new roof was installed to match the zinc corrugated style that was already in existence on the rest of the house. Some gorgeous new timber awning windows now bathe the new room in sunlight, and an alternate front door has been added. The clever thing about this extension is that it adds value to the home on several fronts – there’s the extra square feet, it’s a perfect retreat for parents or children to have some quiet time away from the main kitchen/living/meals area, and it could also be purposed as an ATO allowable designated office (given that it has a separate entry and is ideally located at the closest point to the street).
It was definitely a case of ‘shiver me timbers’ on this one too. The external walls were clad in Western Red Cedar, a barn-style internal ceiling of pine lining boards was added (to complement the other living room), and the structure was also constructed from good old-fashioned timber framework, treated base boards, and rich red merbau decking. Everything was customised to refresh what was there and create an extension with flair.
With a fresh coat of ironstone and cream paint, some contrasting white for the windows, tailored pipework and spouting, and star rated LED lighting, the room was ready to take on whatever the family decided to do with it. Currently, it’s a cosy lounge and entertainment retreat.
