This sprawling five-bedroom home in Warrandyte, complete with a large guesthouse overlooking the pool, has had several makeovers since it was built on an acre of land, in 1980. The current family made their move and secured ownership in 2017, and recently asked us to build the missing piece of their real estate puzzle – a very customised alfresco.
Set on an elevated block, the original house was built beside a fabulously flat backyard space – complete with a large inground pool and a playground lawn. This provided the ideal scenario to link the pool and the kitchen/meals and family rooms to the new pavilion-style alfresco, which was to be constructed smack bang in the middle of all of the entertainment action.
The block is an unusual shape, but the manicured landscaping set the scene, and our very own Custom Outdoor Living Alfresco Designer, Matt Goodie, was able to temper the design to match the guest house as well.
We had the capacity to create a space that opened right up to allow a cross-breeze, and that was also semi-attached to the pool, close to the laundry (for wet feet and towels), and within easy reach of a nearby toilet room – resulting in barrels of family fun that could be had in a much more practical way. And that’s exactly what we achieved!
An awning area was removed and a new vaulted, gable roof was built to form a long room. To one side, stacker doors were added (in similar formation to those on the Guest House) and the other side was open-plan, with the glass pool fence sheltering the lower portion.
The alfresco has six skylights, plaster walls and ceilings, two overhead fans to increase circulation, plenty of low voltage LED lights (with dimmers for ambiance once the sun goes down), and an airy and bright feel during hours of daylight. As with all of our projects, at Custom Outdoor Living, our aim is to think of everything from the get-go, plan for the ideal extension, and keep within the proposed budget.”
No matter what your project ideals are, Custom Outdoor Living can present you with options of grandeur, or help you scale back. We’re not there to push you either. We’ve been in this business for a very long time, and we’re tuned into the Aussie way of life, so our suggestions are generally right on the money!
Custom Outdoor Living provides Alfresco build and design services in Melbourne and, as Registered Builders, with all of the required insurance and warranty protection in place, we engage our trusted quality tradespeople to install and adjust electrical, gas and plumbing lines.
On this Warrandyte project, in particular, storm and grey water lines had to be adjusted and maintained below the alfresco subfloor, just as electrical wiring and gas for the kitchen, lighting, and other appliances, needed to be safely installed to meet compliance regulations.
Our owners now have 67 square meters of extra living space. There are no issues with soggy feet, and the Desperately Fickle Weather Patterns of Melbourne can virtually be completely ignored from this time on – because their new tailor-made alfresco is absolutely ideal for any occasion – day or night.
