Project Overview
Does your living room and kitchen have no covered verandah and look out onto a semi-empty space that you just don’t get around to using to its full potential? Well, why not extend your home with an alfresco area?
The owners of this Californian Bungalow were new to the area. They loved the property, the depth of the north facing backyard and the pool.
So they moved on in, but what they lacked was a covered space for barbeques and entertaining, exercising and just plain lounging around at any time of the day.
“The owners wanted to increase their living area, step outside the back door into a protected zone, and be able to see the newly rejuvenated pool.
They were also keen to keep the roofline simple and consistent to match the existing home, and they were quickly attracted to my design suggestion of installing heaters, a ceiling fan for air circulation.
And skylights to keep the light shining into the house,” says Matt Goodie, Managing Director of Custom Outdoor Living (and the project’s Designer).
“What we love at COL is the diversity of the properties we extend and renovate. Most of our clients know what they want (to a degree), and then we open their eyes to design-inspired opportunities that they might never have thought of, because we’re Registered Builders, Designers and forward thinkers all in one!”
Matt goes on to explain, “Our Alfresco clients in Brighton East cleared the backyard prior to the Alfresco build, and now they’re no longer ‘lost in space’.
They’re now walking under moonlight at night and enjoying sun protection during the day, with a living room view that seamlessly brings the outdoors in.
Through our expertise in architectural design, and by tailoring the project carefully to comply with local Building Regulations in Melbourne, the process was easier than working through an independent Architect.
And to that end we also negotiated with the Local Council to gain permission to build a privacy and fire-rated wall on the boundary.
There was no inkling of wishing and hoping the plans would be approved. We had it pegged from the start.
We worked carefully to their specified budget, and pre-empted their future plans by creating a half wall, to make way for a future outdoor kitchen/barbeque at a later stage.
And a smart weather protecting bar was installed for those late afternoon drinks that might extend long into the evening.”
Practicality, functionality and simplicity were the order of the day, and the owners were delighted with their newly customised, outdoor lifestyle space, featuring energy-efficient low voltage downlights as well.
With natural timber supports and beams complementing the design, the scene is now set to invite the likes of Will Robinson and his whole family over for a spot of fun and a swim as the months roll on.
